What is a Meal?

The Food Service Department knows and understands that children who eat well-balanced, nutritious meals do much better in school. We use the highest quality products to make fresh, homemade meals. Each school day we provide healthy and affordable breakfast and lunch meals.

Offer versus Serve (OVS) is a provision in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program that allows students to decline some of the food offered.  Here is updated guidance to help in the understanding OVS.

OVS at Lunch

At lunch, schools must offer students all five required food components in at least the minimum required amounts.  The components at lunch are: meats/meat alternates; grains; fruit; vegetables; and fluid milk.  Under OVS, a student must take at least three components in the required serving sizes.  One selection must be at least 1/2 cup from either the fruit or vegetable component.

OVS at Breakfast

At breakfast, schools must offer students all three required food components in at least the minimum required amounts.  The components at breakfast are: grains (with optional meats/meat alternates allowed); juice/fruit/vegetable; and milk.  Under OVS, a student must be offered at least four food items and must select at least three food items.  As of the 2013-14 school year, students are not required to take a minimum of 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetables for OVS.

Students are encouraged to make healthy food choices. We provide numerous options each day throughout all of the grade levels, from fresh fruits and vegetables to low fat meats. To help meet the very important nutritional needs of a growing student, we have planned the elementary, middle, and high school menus to accommodate diverse taste buds.

A la Carte Options

We also offer A la Carte choices at Washington and Wilson Middle Schools and Lincoln High School.  These options can be purchased using your prepaid Family Meal Account or purchased with cash.  Options and prices are posted for the students in the school cafe.  They are also listed below in the A la Carte document.

A la Carte Restrictions can be put on your student's account if you choose to not allow them to utilize the funds in their meal account for these items.  Please fill out the A la Carte Restriction form below and return it to the Food Service Office.
