School nursing is a specialized practice area within nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, achievement, and health of students.
What is the Role of a School Nurse?
  • School nurses promote the normal growth and development and positive well-being of students.
  • School nurses provide leadership in promoting health and safety at school.
  • School nurses provide quality health care and intervene with actual and potential health problems.
  • School nurses use nursing judgment in providing case management services of student health concerns.
  • School nurses work with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self -advocacy, and learning.
  • The school nurse may take on additional roles as needed to meet the needs of the school and community
What Services May Be Provided by School Nurses?
  • Providing emergency nursing services » Monitoring of contagious diseases
  • Screenings for vision, hearing, blood pressure, dental and mental health disorders
  • Planning for the health care needs of students with chronic health conditions
  • Providing health education for students, parents, school staff and the community
  • Coordinating student health, with medical and community health services
  • Developing and assisting in the implementation of health policies and procedures
  • Developing a plan and practicing for emergencies that may occur in the school
