Building a Stronger Future

The 2025–2026 school year marked the completion of one of the most significant transitions in the history of the Manitowoc Public School District.

Following research, community engagement, and thoughtful planning, the Board of Education approved a new school configuration designed to strengthen educational opportunities, improve operational efficiency, and create learning environments that better support students at every stage of development.

While this transition included the closure of two elementary schools, it also introduced new learning environments, expanded educational opportunities, and a developmental approach to supporting students from early childhood through middle school.

What Changed

Elementary Schools (Grades K–4)
The district transitioned to a K–4 elementary model designed to provide strong foundational learning while creating clear pathways for students as they grow.

Madison Elementary closed following the 2025–2026 school year.
Jackson Elementary closed following the 2025–2026 school year.
Stangel Elementary opened in the former Stangel Learning Community building.

Riverview Early Learning Center
Riverview Learning Community became the Riverview Early Learning Center, creating a dedicated campus focused on the district's youngest learners.

Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, Riverview serves students in the district's early learning programs, including the new all-day 4K program.

A New Intermediate School Model
One of the most significant changes was the transition from two traditional middle schools to a developmental model that better supports students as they progress through adolescence.

Wilson Middle School became Wilson Intermediate School, serving students in Grades 5–6.

This configuration was intentionally designed to provide students with a supportive bridge between elementary school and middle school. Research shows that transitions into secondary education can temporarily impact academic performance and student well-being. The intermediate school model helps reduce transitional stress while allowing students to develop organizational skills, independence, and confidence before entering middle school.

Washington Middle School
Washington Middle School now serves students in Grades 7–8.

By separating grades 7–8 into their own learning environment, students experience increased academic rigor while benefiting from strong interdisciplinary teaching teams and expanded opportunities for advanced coursework as they prepare for high school.

Lakeshore School of Innovation
The former Stangel Learning Community transitioned to the Lakeshore School of Innovation.

As part of the district's reconfiguration, the program relocated to the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus, providing students with a unique learning environment that supports innovation, personalized learning, and future-ready educational experiences.

Honoring Our Legacy Schools

Although our buildings have changed, the impact of Madison and Jackson Elementary Schools will remain an important part of the Manitowoc Public School District's history.

Before the conclusion of the 2025–2026 school year, both schools welcomed generations of students, staff, families, and community members back for special Legacy Celebrations honoring the memories, traditions, and lasting connections built within their walls.

Looking Ahead

The facilities transition represents more than changes to buildings, it reflects MPSD's commitment to creating learning environments that meet students where they are developmentally, while preparing them for future success.

As our schools continue to evolve, our mission remains unchanged: providing every student with opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.
