EL Information 

The MPSD serves approximately 400 - 500 students who have grown up in a non-English speaking environment. The majority of our English learners are of Hmong and Hispanic backgrounds, but we also serve speakers of other languages from Asia, Europe, and Africa. The English Learner (EL) department is staffed by teachers, teaching assistants, bilingual aides, and interpreters who serve students in grades 5K through 12 by providing language support within the mainstream classroom and/or targeted language instruction within the EL classroom. Our EL team also works collaboratively with classroom teachers to implement a host of instructional best practices to support EL students in not only increasing their English proficiency, but helping them to achieve academic success, as well.

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, our EL teacher team annually reviews ACCESS data to determine areas of focus and develops a program plan with goals designed to address students’ language development gaps and learning needs. 

We consider our EL students and families an integral part of our educational mission. It is a privilege to embrace other languages and cultures within our learning communities, and we know that this breadth of experience is healthy and productive for every MPSD student.
