Measure What Matters.

At Lakeshore School of Innovation, learning is about more than completing assignments or spending a certain amount of time in a classroom. Through Competency-Based Education (CBE), students demonstrate what they know, what they can do, and how they are growing as learners.

Students progress by demonstrating mastery of essential knowledge and skills, with opportunities to receive feedback, strengthen their understanding, and continue growing.

What Is Competency-Based Education?

Competency-Based Education focuses on mastery rather than seat time.

Instead of measuring success primarily by how much time a student spends on a subject, CBE asks a more meaningful question:

Can the student demonstrate what they have learned and apply it?

At LSI, students have opportunities to demonstrate learning through projects, presentations, portfolios, discussions, assessments, and other authentic learning experiences.

The New Basics

LSI prepares students for a world where success requires more than memorizing information. Students develop and demonstrate competencies in five key areas:

Critical Thinking
Students analyze complex problems, evaluate information, make connections, and develop thoughtful solutions.

Collaboration & Teamwork
Students learn to work effectively with others, contribute to a team, communicate ideas, and navigate different perspectives.

Technology Fluency & Coding
Students use modern tools and technology to create, communicate, and design solutions.

Real-World Problem Solving
Students apply their knowledge to authentic, sometimes unstructured situations where there may not be one obvious answer.

Adaptability & Resilience
Students learn to navigate change, adjust their approach, respond to feedback, and learn from challenges and setbacks.

Progress Through Demonstrated Mastery

CBE gives students multiple ways to demonstrate their learning and growth.

Rather than focusing only on whether an assignment was completed, instructors look at the skills and knowledge a student can demonstrate. Students receive feedback throughout the learning process and have opportunities to reflect, revise, and continue developing their skills.

This approach helps students better understand:

What am I learning?
Where am I now?
What do I need to work on next?
How can I demonstrate that I've mastered it?

Preparing Students for What Comes Next

The goal of competency-based education isn't simply to earn credits or complete requirements. It is to help students leave LSI with the ability to think critically, collaborate, solve problems, use technology effectively, and adapt when circumstances change.

Combined with project-based learning and real-world experiences, CBE helps students connect what they learn in school with the skills they'll need beyond it.

Learn by Doing. Lead by Design.

At LSI, we measure what matters, helping students recognize their growth, demonstrate what they know, and build the skills to take their next step with confidence.
