    FCCLA members from Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Wilson Middle School and Washington Middle School recently represented the Manitowoc Public School District at the National FCCLA Conference in Washington, D.C.

     

    Throughout the conference, students participated in general sessions, breakout workshops and Red Talks designed to strengthen their leadership skills, introduce potential career paths and provide strategies for making meaningful contributions within their communities. Students also participated in a rally on Capitol Hill.

     

    Several MPSD students earned national recognition while competing in FCCLA Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Events. Three placed among the top 10 competitors in the nation:

    Anna Kakatsch earned second place nationally and a Gold Medal for her Level 3 Food Innovations project.
    Kyla Baudhuin earned fourth place nationally and a Gold Medal for her Level 1 Food Innovations project.
    Breleigh Grodek earned fourth place nationally and a Gold Medal for her Level 1 Interior Design project.

     

    Additional STAR Event competitors earning Silver Medals included:

    Chloe Hafner and Abby Gebhart — Level 2 Promote and Publicize FCCLA
    Brooklyn Hebert and Maiya Yang — Level 1 Food Innovations

    Lincoln High School FCCLA Adviser Becky Grodek was also recognized for completing the Master Adviser Elite Academy program.

     

    Outside of the conference, students experienced the history and culture of Washington, D.C., by visiting several landmarks, exploring the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and attending a Washington Nationals baseball game.

    Seventy-three Lincoln High School band, choir and orchestra students traveled to Oʻahu, Hawaii, from June 15–22 for a week filled with music, history and cultural experiences.

     

    Students performed at Pearl Harbor and Ala Moana Center. During the Pearl Harbor performance, the group participated in a flag-folding ceremony and presented a wreath in honor of Lincoln High School. The experience gave students an opportunity to reflect on the history and significance of the site while representing their school through music.

     

    Beyond their performances, students participated in a luau and visited Waimea Falls and ʻIolani Palace, expanding their understanding of Hawaiian history, traditions and culture.

     

    Opportunities like this allow students to share their talents in new settings, build stronger connections with their classmates and experience learning that extends far beyond the classroom. Trips of this size also require tremendous planning, responsibility and time from the staff members who accompany students.

     

    A special thank-you to orchestra teacher Simon Ulrich, choir teacher Hannah Koechel, the Lincoln band director and all additional staff and chaperones who helped provide this memorable opportunity for our students.

    MPSD students recently returned from a 17-day journey through Spain that brought language, history and culture to life beyond the classroom.

     

    The trip began with two nights in Madrid and day trips to Toledo and Segovia. Students then traveled to Logroño, where they spent nine nights living with host families. During their homestay, they visited Pamplona, San Sebastián and San Millán—and enjoyed cheering on Spain in the World Cup alongside their hosts.

     

    The group continued to Zaragoza and Barcelona, visiting landmarks and cultural attractions including the Prado Museum, Royal Palace, Guggenheim Museum, Park Güell, Sagrada Família and Picasso Museum. Students also attended a flamenco show, rowed boats in Retiro Park and enjoyed beach days, kayaking and pedal boating.

     

    Travel experiences like this give students an opportunity to practice their language skills, experience another culture firsthand and grow in confidence and independence. They are also made possible by the dedicated staff members who give their time, energy and care to travel with students and create meaningful learning experiences far beyond the school day.

    Manitowoc Public School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Jamie Vandermeuse as the new Head Coach of the Lincoln High School Girls Basketball program.

     

    Vandermeuse brings extensive coaching experience to Lincoln, including five seasons as head basketball coach at Kiel High School, where he compiled an 81-46 record and led the program to a conference championship and regional championship. He has also coached football and baseball at the high school level and is passionate about developing student-athletes both on and off the court.

     

    "I wanted to challenge myself at the Division 1 level, and I feel Lincoln is such a historic place and competes in one of the best conferences in the state in the FRCC," said Vandermeuse.

     

    As he begins his tenure, Vandermeuse is focused on building relationships, developing student-athletes, and creating a program that players, families, and the community can be proud of.

     

    "What excites me most about leading this program is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with our student-athletes and help them grow both on and off the court," he said. "I'm excited to become part of the school and community, build a program that people can be proud of, and create an environment where our players feel supported and have a voice in their own success."

     

    Looking ahead, Vandermeuse hopes to strengthen the connection between Lincoln's high school and youth basketball programs while building a culture of sustained success. He says his approach extends beyond wins and losses.

     

    "I am passionate about basketball, but even more passionate about people. I care deeply about our student-athletes and their families, and I want every player to know they matter. My goal is to help each student-athlete achieve their goals and aspirations while at Lincoln and support their dreams for what lies ahead after Lincoln."

     

    Athletics and Activities Director Stan Diedrich said Vandermeuse's experience and commitment to student-athletes made him a standout candidate during the hiring process.

     

    "Coach Vandermeuse has a clear vision for the future of Lincoln Girls Basketball. His commitment to developing players, strengthening youth involvement, and building a program our community can be proud of made him stand out as the right person to lead our student-athletes.     Lincoln High School seniors were recognized for their hard work, achievements, and future aspirations during the annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony.

     

    This year, 121 students received scholarships totaling more than $600,000, made possible through the generosity of local organizations, businesses, foundations, and individual donors who continue to invest in the success of MPSD students.

     

    In addition to scholarship awards, 16 students received full or opportunity tuition coverage through Lakeshore College and UW-Green Bay, helping remove financial barriers as they pursue their educational and career goals.

     

    The evening celebrated not only academic achievement, but also the dedication, perseverance, leadership, and service demonstrated by members of the Class of 2026 throughout their high school careers.

     

    MPSD extends its sincere appreciation to the scholarship donors, community partners, families, and staff members who support students on their journey to graduation and beyond.

    On May 20, Lincoln High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) held its annual Cording and Induction Ceremony, recognizing students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, service, character, and leadership.

     

    During the ceremony, 44 graduating seniors were awarded NHS honor cords in recognition of their commitment to the organization and their dedication to upholding the pillars of NHS throughout their high school careers. These students have demonstrated academic achievement while also serving their school and community through leadership and service opportunities.

     

    Lincoln High School also welcomed 81 new members into the National Honor Society. Students accepted into NHS completed an application process and were selected based on the organization’s established membership requirements and the values represented by the four pillars of NHS.

     

    The ceremony also marked an exciting step forward for the Lincoln High School NHS Chapter. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, membership opportunities will expand to include students in grades 10–12, allowing more students the opportunity to become involved in the organization earlier in their high school experience.

     

    Congratulations to all of the students recognized during this year’s ceremony for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence.

    For the past three years, Lincoln High School has participated in the Center Stage High School Musical Theatre Showcase through the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, an opportunity that allows high school theatre programs to receive valuable feedback and recognition from industry professionals.

     

    As part of the showcase process, adjudicators attend participating school musicals and provide detailed feedback on all aspects of the production, including student performances, pit orchestra, technical design, and overall production quality. The experience gives students and directors an outside perspective while helping strengthen and grow the program each year.

     

    This year, Lincoln High School earned several notable recognitions among 34 participating schools across the region.

     

    Jackie Dramm and Denzel Estrella were both recognized as Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role nominees, placing them among just 18 students selected in the category. Lincoln’s partnership with the School to Work office was also honored with the Community Engagement Award.

     

    In addition, Jackie Dramm received one of only two Inspiration Through the Arts Scholarships awarded through the program. Jackie was also selected to participate in Encore Singers, an audition-only performance group connected to the Center Stage Awards that performs at events throughout the year.

     

    Lincoln students Angelica Figueroa and Lilian Jacobson were selected to represent the school as performers in the showcase opening or closing numbers.

     

    Teacher and Director, Deanne Stokes, was nominated for the Influential Theatre Educator Award.

     

    Congratulations to all of the students and staff involved in Lincoln High School’s theatre program for their hard work, talent, and dedication throughout the year.

    Ava recently earned a college scholarship to continue playing flag football at UW–Parkside, becoming only the second female athlete in Wisconsin to receive a collegiate scholarship for the sport.

     

    Her accomplishment highlights not only her athletic talent and dedication, but also the growing opportunities for female athletes in flag football across the state and country. Ava’s success is helping pave the way for future student-athletes interested in the rapidly expanding sport.

     

    The achievement is another exciting milestone for Lincoln High School athletics and a proud moment for the Manitowoc Public School District community.

    Lincoln High School recently recognized 61 seniors who earned the Dual Credit Honor Cord, celebrating their hard work and commitment to college and career readiness.

    The Dual Credit Honor Cord is awarded to students who have successfully earned 12 or more college credits through a dual credit program while still in high school. The green and navy cord represents the school colors of both the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay and Lakeshore College, where many of these students completed coursework and earned college credit.

    Students received their cords during the Senior Class Meeting on Monday, May 4. These cords will be worn proudly during graduation as a symbol of the dedication, perseverance, and academic achievement these students demonstrated throughout their high school careers.

    Eleven Manitowoc Public School District students have qualified for the 2026 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference (NLC), an impressive accomplishment that reflects months of preparation, professionalism, and academic growth.

     

    Students qualifying for Nationals include:

    FBLA advisors Melanie Shimek and Josh Moreau said qualifying for Nationals places students among the top competitors in the country and reflects the countless hours students dedicate to preparing for competition. “Every qualifier has vastly improved their skills in communication, personal and project management, research, and attaining goals,” said Shimek and Moreau. “They have shown that young adults want to be challenged academically and held to high professional standards.”

     

    For students, the experience has gone beyond competition alone.

     

    Lluvia Salas said the experience helped build both confidence and perspective. “During this process, I learned that to do something hard means to simply get started. If you start the process even with something small, you are going to do well.” Salas also shared what surprised her most while preparing for the competition. “While I was preparing for my event, I learned that if you want to do well, you can not worry about what others are thinking of you. You have to be thinking about how you are going to feel when you're done. Are you going to be worrying about what they think about you? Or are you going to be proud of yourself and how you did?”

     

    For Trevyn Karenke,  the preparation process gave him a new perspective on coding and problem-solving. “Furthering my understanding of how computers work is something I didn't expect to learn. My event required making an application, and usually on my own time, I did this using an engine. My partner and I challenged ourselves to make it from scratch.” Karenke also shared that he is looking forward to traveling to Nationals this summer. “Leaving the state is something I'm looking forward to. I've only ever left Wisconsin once.”

    
    Brinley Schley, who qualified in Event Planning, said one of the most surprising parts of FBLA was the opportunity to connect with students who share similar interests. “I learned that everyone was so welcoming, and the environment was so fun. We also learned that so many other teens like us love FBLA and competing just like we do.” Schley also noted the amount of preparation involved in her event. “One thing people might not know is that it's a really popular event. You also need to work really hard to get everything accomplished, but it was really fun!”

     

    Cole Palmer and Reily Shimek qualified in Business Plan, an event that challenged students to think through the realities of building and operating a business. Reily Shimek said one of the biggest surprises during preparation was realizing how detailed the process truly was. “I didn’t expect how detailed a business plan actually has to be. It’s not just an idea, you have to think through finances, marketing, operations, and real risks like you’re actually running the business.” Shimek also shared what she was most proud of after completing the project. “I’m most proud of how complete our plan turned out. We built something that feels realistic and could actually work, not just something for a competition.”

    
    The FBLA National Leadership Conference brings together students from across the country to compete in business and leadership events while building career-ready skills and professional experience.

     

    MPSD is proud of all 11 students who qualified for Nationals and wishes the attending students the best of luck in San Antonio this summer.

     

    As students prepare for the National Leadership Conference this summer, Lincoln FBLA members are continuing fundraising efforts to help offset travel and competition expenses associated with the trip to San Antonio.

     

    Community members interested in supporting students on their journey to Nationals can watch for upcoming Lincoln FBLA fundraising opportunities. Monetary donations are also appreciated and checks can be made payable to Lincoln FBLA.

    Manitowoc Lincoln High School’s FCCLA chapter was recognized at the Wisconsin FCCLA State Conference for making the largest donation to the organization’s statewide Paul’s Party fundraiser.

     

    Paul’s Party is an organization dedicated to supporting para-athletes by helping provide access to essential equipment and opportunities.

     

    Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, LHS FCCLA students participated in a variety of fundraisers, but their most successful effort came through the Paul’s Party campaign. FCCLA members attended winter sporting events and organized a “Dash for Cash” activity, raising an impressive $1,072.30.

     

    The donation was presented during the FCCLA State Conference in early April. Out of 98 FCCLA chapters in attendance, Manitowoc Lincoln contributed the highest fundraising total. Overall, Wisconsin FCCLA chapters raised a combined $5,003.16 for the cause.

     

    For their efforts, the LHS chapter received the Ultimate Change Champion Award, along with a plaque, an inflatable FCCLA mascot llama, and a Kwik Trip gift card to host an ice cream social for chapter members.

     

    The fundraiser reflects FCCLA’s focus on leadership, service, and making a positive impact both in school and throughout the community.

    For Soraya George, music has always been more than just an activity; it’s been a lifelong passion. Having played the violin since the age of three, Soraya continues to challenge herself and grow as a musician through her participation in the St. Norbert College Youth Symphony.

    The Youth Symphony is the highest-level ensemble within the St. Norbert Youth Orchestra Program, bringing together advanced student musicians from across Northeast Wisconsin. Rehearsing weekly and performing complex classical repertoire, the group provides a unique opportunity for students to collaborate at a high level beyond their school experience.

    One of the most meaningful aspects of the experience has been the dedication shared among the musicians. With students coming from different schools and meeting just once a week, much of the work happens independently.

    “I really enjoy rising to the level of the music,” Soraya shared. “It helps me continue to grow as a musician. Everyone is so dedicated to practicing outside of rehearsal so that when we come together, the pieces really come to life.”

    Performing in a full symphony has also expanded her musical experience. Unlike a traditional string orchestra, the Youth Symphony includes woodwind, brass, and percussion sections—allowing students to perform original compositions at a higher level.

    “Playing with the full orchestra allows us to play amazing pieces of music,” she said. “Our conductor knows we will rise to the challenge.”

    Throughout the concert season, Soraya and her fellow musicians performed works by renowned composers including Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Edward Elgar, Igor Stravinsky, and Leonard Bernstein. Each piece brought its own challenges and opportunities for growth.

    In Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Soraya navigated complex rhythms, playing offbeat while the rest of the orchestra followed the downbeat, something she described as mentally challenging but rewarding. In Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, she pushed her technical skills by playing at higher ranges than she typically encounters.

    These experiences, she says, continue to shape her as both a musician and a performer.

    For other students considering auditioning for opportunities like the Youth Symphony, Soraya encourages preparation and confidence.

    “Know your audition pieces really well and practice as much as you can,” she said. “Remember that the people there want you to succeed. They’re excited you’re there and want to encourage students.”

    Soraya’s dedication and passion for music are a reflection of the opportunities available to students both within MPSD and beyond. Her commitment to growth and excellence continues to make her a standout representative of the district’s performing arts programs.

  • Lincoln Students Take Civic Leadership to the State Capitol Through Youth & Government Program

    Six students from Lincoln High School recently had the opportunity to take their civic learning beyond the classroom and into the Wisconsin State Capitol through the YMCA Youth & Government program.

     

    Youth & Government gives high school students the chance to experience the legislative process firsthand. Students spend months researching real-world issues, writing mock legislation, and preparing to debate their ideas before traveling to Madison for a three-day conference held at the State Capitol.

     

    This year, the Lincoln delegation had an extraordinary showing. Of the 17 student bills passed during the conference, six were written by Manitowoc Lincoln students.

     

    Students tackled a range of important issues through their legislation, including addressing fentanyl contamination risks, improving protections for homeschooled children, encouraging grocery stores to donate edible food to food recovery organizations, and reducing agricultural runoff.

     

    For many students, the experience was both empowering and eye-opening. Presenting and debating their ideas in a formal legislative setting allowed them to build confidence while engaging in thoughtful discussion about real issues affecting communities across Wisconsin.

     

    The group is advised by Barbara Schmidt, who has led Lincoln’s Youth & Government program for the past 11 years. Schmidt noted that the success of this year’s delegation was especially notable, with such a large number of bills from one school passing during the conference.

     

    Programs like Youth & Government help students develop leadership skills, strengthen their understanding of civic engagement, and see how their voices can make an impact.

     

    We are proud of these Lincoln Ships for representing Manitowoc and demonstrating what it means to be active, informed citizens.

    At Manitowoc Lincoln High School, the weight room is more than a place to lift weights; it’s a place where students build confidence, teamwork, and healthy habits. Recently, one of Lincoln’s PE teachers shared that work on a larger stage, presenting at the National High School Strength Coaches Association (NHSSCA) conference at Eau Claire North High School.

     

    His session, “Building Battleships,” focused on how Lincoln’s strength and speed program uses technology and friendly competition to keep students engaged and growing. “Building Battleships revolved around how we use technology to gamify our training and track key performance indicators daily, in efforts to individualize training for students to meet them where they are at.” At Lincoln, students track sprint speeds, jump height, and lifting performance to turn workouts into motivating challenges. The information helps staff tailor training so every student, from beginners to advanced athletes, can improve.

     

    “We gamify all of our sprints and jumps by tracking their speeds and height or distance jumped, and use Velocity Based Training to gamify our barbell lifts.”

    "Tracking our training allows us to make informed decisions about all of our students, which in turn allows us to differentiate our training as a Unified Program. It allows us to meet students where they are at, and at the same time, challenge our advanced students with certain bar speeds.”

     

    Coaches attending the conference were eager to learn more about Lincoln’s approach. “I received a lot of great feedback from other coaches at the conference, as well as sparked conversations with other coaches who wanted more details on my presentation.”

    
     
    A lifelong athlete, he embraced an opportunity early in his Lincoln career to expand strength training opportunities for students and athletes. Over nine years at Lincoln, he has coached football, basketball, and track & field while earning his Master’s in Applied Exercise Science with a Strength and Conditioning emphasis. His philosophy centers on building strength safely and consistently. “All sports and all athletes should participate in a form of strength training year-round. When doing this, injuries go down, performance goes up, and our culture improves.”

     

    Looking ahead, he hopes to introduce a new team competition, the Shipyard Showdown, where Lincoln athletes will compete in strength, speed, and power events to crown the top Battleships.

     

    Lincoln’s strength and speed program reflects MPSD’s commitment to meeting students where they are and helping them grow. By combining data, encouragement, and teamwork, the program supports athletes and non-athletes alike in building lifelong fitness habits.

    Lincoln High School senior Khloe Jalbert is headed to the WIAA State Gymnastics Meet after an impressive performance at Sectionals, where she earned a 9.2 on the balance beam, her personal best.

    Khloe’s accomplishments extend beyond the gym. She has earned her fourth consecutive Academic All-State honor, achieving the Gold Level this year with a 4.0 GPA.

    Students and staff gathered in the JFK Fieldhouse to give Khloe a special send-off before she heads to state. The Lincoln band played while students filled the stands to celebrate her achievement and wish her good luck.

    During the send-off, Coach Jacque Bartow shared a message encouraging students to make the most of their time at Lincoln by getting involved in school activities.

    “I want you all to remember that you have a choice. You have a choice to make things good or maybe not so good, but it is your choice. Get involved in band, orchestra, choir, math club, science club, whatever is your jam, do it. But don’t let these four years go by without giving something a try.”
    Athletic Director Stan Diedrich and Bartow also thanked the maintenance team and students who help set up for gymnastics meets, recognizing the many people who support the program behind the scenes.

    The WIAA State Gymnastics Meet will take place Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids High School, where Khloe will represent Lincoln High School and the Manitowoc Public School District.

    The district wishes Khloe the best of luck as she competes at state.

    Lincoln senior Emjay Neumann received a spirited send-off during WIN period at JFK as teammates, students, staff, and the Lincoln band gathered to cheer her on before she heads to the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament.

     

    Neumann’s season has already been one for the record books. She surpassed the 150-win milestone earlier this season and now sits at 164 career victories, tying the Lincoln High School all-time record. She enters State with a 39–3 record and also set a new school mark with 100 pins this season.

     

    A four-time State Qualifier, Neumann will compete as the #3 seed at 114 pounds, after finishing as State runner-up last year at 120 pounds.

     

    The 83rd Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual Wrestling Tournament and the fifth Girls Individual Wrestling Tournament will be held Thursday–Saturday, Feb. 26–28, at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

     

    Lincoln wrestling assistant coach Adam Shavlik shared his support during the send-off. “I think we’ve got a really good chance this year. Good job, Emjay. Good luck, we’re all rooting for you.”

    
    Lincoln Associate Principal Cody Nielsen added, “We are very fortunate for Emjay to be representing Lincoln High School and our community at the State Tournament.”
