MPSD loves art! This week, the MPSD Board of Education purchased artwork from three students, continuing an annual tradition that began in the 1990s. This year's honored student artists were:
Evangeline Manjarrez-Hernandez, who under the guidance of Manitowoc Lincoln High School Art Teacher Emily Weinberger, created a floral batik. Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique that originated in Indonesia used to create intricate patterns on fabric.
Inara Butler, who under the guidance of Washington Middle School Art Teacher Tim Jadowski, explored the style of abstraction and color theory using prismacolors.
Samara Soto-Nieto, a kindergartener under the direction of Madison Elementary School Art Teacher Morgan Siebold, who created a watercolor showcasing her craftsmanship and knowledge of shape and color.
The chosen artwork, which was also exhibited at the @RahrWestArtMuseum will be displayed at MPSD's Central Office for all to appreciate in the years to come. Our art department appreciates that we have the opportunity to continue the tradition - it's such a wonderful opportunity for our students.

Mrs. Longmeyer Promoted to Washington Principal
MPSD is pleased to announce that Mrs. Lainey Longmeyer, Associate Principal at Manitowoc Lincoln
MPSD is pleased to announce that Mrs. Lainey Longmeyer, Associate Principal at Manitowoc Lincoln High School, will be the Principal at Washington Middle School as of July 1, pending Board approval. Mrs. Longmeyer is an alumnus of both Washington (then-Junior High) and Lincoln. Fun fact: while a student at Washington, she was president of the Student Council and won a Pauline Tienor school award as a 9th grader. Then-Principal Kathy Lemberger predicted that one day, Lainey would return to Washington to lead the school.
More about Mrs. Longmeyer:
She is a Manitowoc native who has worked for MPSD for the past eight years. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from UW - Stevens Point in 2017 and began her career as a Special Education teacher at Lincoln in 2017. A trusted leader, she became LHS Dean of Students in 2019 and earned her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Holy Family College in Manitowoc in 2020.
Longmeyer became Lincoln’s Associate Principal in 2022 and served as Master Scheduler & Programming Administrator, Safety Coordinator and an instructional leader and coach. She also helped to handle student discipline and character development.
MPSD Director of Student Services Katie Eichmann, whose department oversees Special Education where Longmeyer began her career, said “Longmeyer’s passion and commitment to students in the MPSD is second to none. Lainey inspires others to be their very best for students through her dedication and service to those around her.”
Longmeyer told the district she was passionate about providing students at Washington Middle School opportunities to achieve at high levels and working alongside the committed staff members to get there. She will promote a safe and effective environment to provide all students with engaging, high levels of learning and growing. She has a deep ambition to support staff on how to leverage their strengths and grow their teaching practices.
MPSD hopes all Wolves families and employees will give Mrs. Longmeyer a warm welcome when she moves to Washington July 1 and help her build strong relationships.

The MPSD Board of Education is pleased to announce that Lee Thennes, a veteran MPSD teacher, principal and administrator, has been selected as the district's next Superintendent.
The Board appointed Thennes as Interim MPSD Superintendent last September, and he was one of three finalists who interviewed with Board members and two panels composed of parents, staff, students and community members. The Board hired Thennes at its April 29 meeting.
Thennes said it is an incredible honor to be selected as superintendent. “I am deeply committed to our students, staff, families, and community, and look forward to building on the district’s strengths while working together to create even greater opportunities for every learner,” Thennes said. “Our future is bright, and I’m excited to lead the district on this continued journey of excellence, innovation, and student success.”

All MPSD elementary schools could have new youth sports programs such as basketball and running
All MPSD elementary schools could have new youth sports programs such as basketball and running clubs next fall, under a proposal approved by the Board of Education.
Expanded youth sports opportunities will not only help strengthen MPSD's middle and high school athletic programs but also increase student engagement in elementary schools, which has shown to increase student attendance and academic achievement.
Supt. Lee Thennes told the Board, "We are thrilled to announce an exciting proposal. This initiative aims to expand our elementary sports programming for the 2025-2026 school year to include all schools and introduce several new sports options.
"We firmly believe that engaging students in sports at an early age fosters a stronger sense of belonging within their school communities, a factor that research consistently links to higher levels of student achievement. Additionally, introducing sports to more students at a younger age has the potential to strengthen participation in interscholastic athletics at the middle and high school levels.
"By broadening access and encouraging greater participation, we also anticipate that this initiative will enhance the overall competitiveness of our athletic programs across all sports in the years to come. We look forward to sharing more details and working together to bring this vision to life for our students."
Manitowoc Lincoln High School phy ed teacher and strengths and conditioning coach Michael Longmeyer
Manitowoc Lincoln High School phy ed teacher and strengths and conditioning coach Michael Longmeyer donated white blood cells for a matched man with stage-four leukemia.
Longmeyer got a call out of the blue in August, asking if he remembered that nine years ago, when he was a student at UW-Stevens Point, he stopped at a college rec center table and gave a cheek swab for the NMDP "Be The Match" national bone marrow registry. Now, all these years later, he was a match. Longmeyer didn't hesitate to help, and went through various tests, paperwork and ultimately drove to Milwaukee to do the donation, which was swiftly flown to the recipient. Longmeyer's students were impressed and inspired, with some saying they want to be like him and join the national registry once they turn 18.
THANKS to Preston Stober at NBC26 for this great story! And thanks, Coach Longmeyer, for being such a great role model for your students and athletes!
