Washington Middle School

Building Confidence. Inspiring Leadership. Preparing for What's Next.

Since 1936, Washington Middle School has been helping students grow academically, socially, and personally during some of the most important years of their educational journey. Today, Washington serves students in grades 7 and 8, providing engaging learning experiences that challenge students to think critically, solve problems, and prepare for success in high school and beyond.

At Washington, students are encouraged to become confident learners, responsible leaders, and active members of their school community. Our dedicated staff creates a welcoming environment where every student is known, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential through academics, athletics, activities, and meaningful relationships.

While generations of students proudly called themselves Wolves, Washington is now part of MPSD's unified Ships family. We honor the traditions that have shaped our school while embracing a shared commitment to excellence, belonging, and student success.

Why Families Choose Washington

The middle school years are a time of tremendous growth, discovery, and preparation for the future. At Washington, students develop the academic knowledge, independence, and confidence they need to succeed in high school and beyond.

Students benefit from:

✅ Rigorous and engaging learning opportunities
✅ Caring educators who support every student
✅ A variety of athletics, clubs, and extracurricular activities
✅ Leadership and service opportunities
✅ Strong partnerships between school and home
✅ A safe, respectful, and inclusive school community

Preparing for High School

Washington Middle School serves as an important bridge between childhood and young adulthood. During grades 7 and 8, students strengthen the academic, organizational, and interpersonal skills they'll use throughout high school and beyond.

Our goal is to ensure every student leaves Washington ready to embrace new opportunities, overcome challenges, and continue growing as a learner, leader, and member of the Manitowoc Public School District community.

    • Building Connections, Not Consequences: Washington Middle School’s RISE Room Featured on Local News

A program at Washington Middle School is earning attention for doing something powerful — helping students grow through relationships instead of punishment.

Washington’s RISE Room was recently featured by local news outlet NBC 26 for its innovative approach to supporting students who may be struggling with behavior, emotions, or challenges during the school day.

Instead of traditional detention, the RISE Room gives students a chance to pause, reflect, and reset. Staff members work with students to talk through what happened, build coping strategies, and strengthen relationships so students can return to class ready to learn.

This approach aligns closely with MPSD’s commitment to a Culture of Excellence — creating environments where students feel safe, supported, and connected so they can succeed academically and socially.
