The Manitowoc Public School District has been honored with two 2017 Spectrum Awards from the Wisconsin School Public Relations Association (WSPRA).

Spectrum Awards recognize high-quality communication efforts produced by or on behalf of Wisconsin school districts. This year, the statewide competition honored 40 school districts with awards. WSPRA presented the Spectrum Awards on Nov. 9 at the organization’s annual conference in Elkhart Lake.

The Manitowoc Public School District received 2017 Spectrum Awards of Merit for the district’s monthly staff e-newsletter and for its Manitowoc Nation alumni and community engagement.

Manitowoc Superintendent Mark Holzman thanked WSPRA and the judges for the honor. “One of our key priorities at MPSD is building relationships – with our students, families, staff, alumni and community. We started our staff e-newsletter and the Manitowoc Nation to improve communication and build relationships.”

WSPRA President Sarah Heck said, “Spectrum Award winners exemplify the very best communications work in school districts across the state. The winners demonstrate the value of engaging stakeholders in order to build community support for Wisconsin’s public schools.

Manitowoc started its monthly staff e-newsletter, MPSD Messenger, in May 2016. The Manitowoc Nation website and alumni/community outreach efforts were launched in September 2016. MPSD partnered with Alumni Nations and CESA 6 Communications Coordinator Lisa Sink to implement the alumni outreach and district communication efforts.

WSPRA’s Spectrum Awards are judged by members of the Illinois School Public Relations Association (INSPRA) on a 30-point scale in six areas: goals and objectives, research and planning, execution and evaluation, results, language and design.

The Wisconsin School Public Relations Association is a professional association representing schools, school districts, educational associations, consulting agencies and organizations. The theme for the 2017 conference was “Relationships Matter! Improving Student Success through True Engagement.”

WSPRA is a state affiliate of the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). The mission of WSPRA is to expand the capacity of its members to provide effective communication management for the purpose of strengthening educational opportunities for all students.
